i'm gonna go with ringworm... not actually a worm but its a fungus. and it is contagious to people. a quick trip to the vet will let you find out for sure and then he can give your cat meds to treat.

Yes it could but it also could be ringworm, my cat lost a chunk of hair on his tail when this happened. Talk to a vet about a special test they can do (its like a blacklight) they shine on the spot to see if it is infected by ringworm. This can be treated by antibiotics and a special cream to put on any bald spots you notice on the cat. Avoid touching it because ringworm can be contageous to humans also! Best thing to do is get to your vet- your kitty will appreciate it!
