Can abruptly stopping predisone cause sudden hair loss?

i have rhuematiod arthritis %26amp; was taking predisone for a short period of time. I was not to able to continue the medicine, so stopped it after i ran out of the perscription. About a wk. %26amp; 1/2 later, I started losing quite a bit of hair and am still losing it. Just wanted to know if it was caused by stopping the steriods

Prednisone prescribed for only a week or ten days usually is a tapered dose. If by "short period of time" you mean several months or more, then there are many withdrawal symptoms that affect different people in different ways, some of which can be very serious. If your only side affect is the sudden hair loss, then you probably weren't on it too long, and might be all right. But you really should see your doctor, the sooner the better, tell the scheduler that you abruptly stopped the drug. You didn't say when you stopped or how long you've been off now - what if there are effects you aren't aware of yet?

As to your specific question about HAIR LOSS, the prednisone certainly could be the cause, again, effects do vary. I was on it for over 2 years, and my significant hair loss ceased, but was already improving while I was tapering. At that time I also had begun some supplements that included gelatin, which could have contributed. Think about anything else different you did or stopped, food or any kind of drugs, new hair products (you never know..) or if you've been under a lot of stress that could have affected your hair. im sorry to say that prednisone can mess you up in any way it chooses. it is such a powerful drug.you have to go off it slowly, very. call you dr who prescribed it, tell him what your going thru and ask if he can help you get off it with samples. alot of ppl ask that so dont be shy. really, he should know whats going on. and you dont want to cause any damage to your body by being off abruptly. it really is a more powerful drug than we think. it can cause emotional changes, eatin habit changes and a gen feeling of crappiness. ive even heard of ppl who feel neurotic on it. please call your doc, him or the nurses will help you if you are honest about what your going thru.good luck.
