Change her diet- most skin/coat problems are linked to poor nutrition. For a sharpei, which are prone to all sorts of allergies, I strongly urge you to look into raw feeding.

is your sharpe a purebred shar pei? I can't think of any reason why a vet would call dog's tale a rat tail... that is just mean .... I just encourage you to get a second opininion at another vet... it could be mange or allergies... does your dog tend to itch alot on her tail???
