Why do men lose more hair than women?

Actually, they don't- Men and women lose hair at about the same rate- However, men lose hair in a specific pattern, called, appropriately "male pattern balding". Men in their 50's actually have *more* hair on the sides and back then women of the same age do, on average, and less on top.

The idea that an excess of testosterone doesn't make sense, because by far the greatest testosterone level is when a man is young, and it decreases after that. It is testosterone that causes hair loss, but it's not the overproduction or excess- There are genes controlled developmentally (more produced as you get older) that kick in, which produce proteins under the regulation of testosterone. These proteins generate a substance that slowly closes the follicle, like cement. Other developmental genes on the body respond to testosterone differently-by stimulating hair growth. Think about it- If an excess of testosterone alone caused hair loss, then why do men keep getting hairier (outside the top of the head) as they get older? It has everything to do with the response of the follicular cells on the top of the head vs. the rest of the body.

*edit* it is not a matter of sex-linked genetic traits, at least not a matter of men getting genes that women do not- Proof of this comes from females who take, for whatever reason, testosterone. They show the same male-pattern baldness, growth of body hair, deepening voice, larger and stronger muscles, etc. Women do not get this type of baldness, in general, because they do not make sufficient testosterone to stimulate either loss of head hair or production of body hair. In a similar vein, men that take estrogen will grow breasts.

Why do men lose more hair than women?

Thanks, and thanks for the vote Report It

Why do men lose more hair than women?

NOT TRUE ,ITS ABOUT EVEN

Why do men lose more hair than women?

becoz the hair of women have a lots of proteins than men..and its not nice that women have a small hair..

Why do men lose more hair than women?

because the men hormon that realease body arfter a usally 30 years old

Why do men lose more hair than women?

Testosterone encourages hair growth but an excess causes hairloss. Seriously! (the follicles can't keep up with the production so the hair fibres become thinner and weaker, so they fall out more easily)

Why do men lose more hair than women?

How about a bald women..! so god's gift to women- hair..!

Why do men lose more hair than women?

because of genetics.

lets say that the genes coding for baldness is B. BB for homozygous dominant, Bb for heterozygous, and bb for recessive.

the expression of the trait is sex influenced. in the case of baldness, the trait is expressed when a male is homozygous dominant (BB) or heterozygous (Bb). for a female, baldness can only be expressed when she is homozygous dominant (BB) for the trait.

the probability of getting a heterozygous pair is 1/2 while it is only a 1/4 probability for homozygous.

that is why men have more tendency to become bald (or lose hair) than women.

Why do men lose more hair than women?

Men have only one X chromosome. So if a woman happens to have a balding X chromosome on one of the two, she can have another to neutralize the other effects of that one. However, men don't have an additional X chromosome to help them hide the effects of balding. So if they happen to have a tendency to go bald on their X chromosome, chances are, they'll probably go bald. :)
